RedBull Minidrome Glasgow
The 1st of two Redbull minidrome events came back to the UK on the 2nd October with the next one being held on the 22nd in Manchester. The old fruit market in Glasgow was the venue for round 1 where hundreds of spectators were on hand to witness the action live on the smallest velodrome in the world.
The Red Bull Mini Drome is engineered by Velotrack, the team who built the velodromes for the Atlanta Olympics and the Delhi Commonwealth Games. The track measures 25 metres in circumference and is 1.8 meters wide.
Our very own Neil Cousins on track battled his way to 4th with his rear tyre exploding mid turn overall.
Congratulations to our winner! Toms Alsberg, came all the way from Latvia and in the process, broke the world minidrome record with a staggering time of 33.555 seconds over 10 laps, an average lap time of 3.355 seconds (took me a while that one), Obscene! Pizes are to be had with Gold, Silver and Bronze Plugs for the top 3 and a special bag of goodies for those who qualify.
With the next event just a little over a week Red Bull will be bringing the world’s smallest velodrome to the Victoria Baths in Manchester to challenge fixed gear riders from across the country for the first time in the North West. Victoria Baths will open its doors at 2pm where up to 500 spectators will be able to watch the qualifying round of this fixed gear event, free of charge on a first come first serve basis. At 6:30pm the quickest 32 riders over 10 laps will progress to the finals in a single pursuit, knockout round. For more details and how to regsiter head over here www.redbull.co.uk
