10 Reasons to Choose an Electric Assist Bike
Electric bicycles. E-bikes. Electric assist bikes. Call them what you will, these two-wheeled wonders are all the rage, and people can’t get enough of them. In fact, in 2021, Americans bought an e-bike every 52 seconds.
Haven’t yet discovered yet what the hype is all about for yourself? Let’s talk.
Haven’t been on any kind of bike in decades or think bikes are just for kids or Lycra-clad men whizzing down the road? That’s not the case at all. E-bikes change the whole biking game and make it an activity everyone can enjoy, no matter your age or experience. You don’t have to be super fit, don workout gear, or have any finish lines to cross. You just have to want to roll through life in a different, more enjoyable way.
From commuter e-bikes, to electric mountain bikes, and those made for comfortable, leisurely rides, there are e-bikes to fit every lifestyle. Not only that, but e-bikes significantly improve the lives of those who ride them. You have nothing to lose (but hassles and headaches) and a whole new, more active, enjoyable lifestyle to gain by hopping on one and seeing just how much it will move you.
While the benefits are countless, we’ve narrowed them down a bit to come up with the top 10 reasons to consider a Charge electric assist bike.
1. Be Moved
We want to move you, both literally and figuratively. Of course our bikes are a fantastic alternative to cars or public transportation whether you’re running errands, commuting to work, or just going for a spin. They’re nimble, dependable and have the power to get you where you’re going without the hassle of fighting for a parking space or getting stuck in traffic.
It’s the experience you have along the way, however, where our bikes really shine. We aim to provide people with authentically moving experiences. Our bikes are designed with the belief that life is less about winning the race and more about enjoying all the moments along the ride.
2. Fitness Without Fatigue
An e-bike is a great way to effortlessly build exercise into your daily life and embrace a more vibrant, active lifestyle. While the electric pedal assist and/or the throttle can do some of the work for you, your legs aren’t off the hook completely. Unlike a motorcycle or dirt bike, an e-bike requires pedaling most of the time. It’s up to you though, just how hard you want to pedal at any given time.
Say there’s a route you’d really love to take, but there are some huge hills along the way. On a traditional bike, you may choose to take another, easier route, but an electric bike gives you the confidence to take any route you want to take. Some days you may want to push yourself and pedal hard to conquer those hills and use little to no power assist. Other days, you can kick in a higher level of power assist and say to hell with those hills. With our bikes that are equipped with a throttle, you can even kick up your heels all together and coast for a while when you feel like it.
One of your customers—Debra, 61—told us that in less than a year after her husband got her a Charge e-bike, she lost 50 pounds and was down two sizes due to her daily rides. She said the electric bike keeps her exercising consistently and lets her go further and to places she never dreamed she could go before. She’s been so thrilled with her results that she nominated her husband to receive a free Charge e-bike through our More to You promotion, and now the two of them are continuing the ride to fitness together. You can read more about their story here.
3. Go at Your Own Speed
The motor is what differentiates electric assist bikes from traditional bikes and lets you charge up hills effortlessly and zip through town with ease. It helps you get from Point A to Point B and back home again at speeds up to 20 mph without excruciating effort. You can pedal when you want, as hard as you want, but you can also take it easy when you feel like it. The end result—you feel empowered and energized at the end of the day, not exhausted and depleted.
You set the pace; our bikes will keep up.
4. Options, We’ve Got ‘Em
Looking for an electric mountain bike, a commuter e-bike or just one made for everyday life? We’ve got options… but not too many options to be overwhelming. We offer three bikes, for three types of riders:
The City is our electric hybrid bike made for urban life and commuting. It features five levels of pedal assist and a throttle that gives you the option to kick up your heels and coast.
The Comfort is our everyday electric cruiser bike that makes it a pleasure to get around. It also features five levels of pedal assist and a throttle, so you have ultimate control over your ride. You can zip where you’re going quickly or cruise leisurely and take in the sights as you go.
The XC is our rugged electric off-road bike that provides a passport to adventure. With big, grippy, fat tires, tough shocks and a Shimano motor to flatten the rough stuff, the XC E-Bike is ready to take you where you want to go.
Each of our e-bikes comes with a great array of standard premium features (more on those later) that make the bikes easy and enjoyable to ride and own. They’re consistently rated as some of the best e-bikes in the industry by independent experts. For example, last year, we racked up honors, such as being named “Best E-Bike for Small Spaces” by Gear Patrol and the “Best Lightweight Electric Bike for Women” by Woman’s World.
They’re a pleasure to choose and a pleasure to ride, and they’re practical to boot.
5. Go the Distance
Just how far can you go on a Charge bike? There are no limits, though you will have to charge your battery once in a while. In general, one full charge of the battery will let you go about 50 miles before you have to charge it again. That mileage varies a bit depending on the weather, terrain, rider’s weight and other factors, but, in general, you’re good to go for about 50 miles.
The batteries’ charging time depends on how much power is left. The City and Comfort bikes each take about 3 hours to reach 80 percent capacity and 7 hours to fully recharge. The Charge XC bike reaches 80 percent capacity in about 2.5 hours and requires approximately 5 hours for a full charge.
6. Easy to Assemble
Speaking of easy… our bikes are seriously easy to assemble. There aren’t a ton of parts or lengthy instructions to juggle. Our bikes are shipped nearly fully assembled, and almost anyone can put one together in just about 10 minutes flat.
Bonus: As part of our commitment to environmental conservation, the packaging the bike is shipped in was intentionally designed to minimize waste by eliminating all the foam and plastic wrap, using only 100% recyclable materials.
7. All the Right Stuff
As for those features we were talking about… our bikes don’t come with a ton of bells and whistles that you won’t use and that needlessly jack up the price. Instead, they all come with a standard set of features that make our bikes safer, more practical and more enjoyable to ride. They include:
- High-quality, aluminum frame that’s lightweight, yet built to last, and ready to ride in any weather.
- Powerful, rear-hub motor, which that provides electric assist up to 20 mph.
- Locking, removable battery that gives you up to 50 miles on a single charge and can easily be recharged on or off the bike.
- Folding handlebar and petals that open and close in seconds—meaning you need less space to store or transport your bike.
- Comfortable seats and grips, so you can get there and back with ease.
- Puncture-resistant Goodyear tires that offer unsurpassed, all-weather traction and robust flat protection.
- Automatic tire pressure sensors that take out the guesswork and show red when you need air, or green if you're good to go. !
- High-powered, integrated front and rear lights and reflective tire walls that ensure you can see and be seen, day or night.
- A sturdy rear rack that makes it easy to attach baskets, crates, or bins for all your daily essentials.
At Charge, we strive to bring biking to more people, and to us that means affordable, well-made e-bikes. Are there other fancier bikes with tons of bells and whistles out there? Sure, but that’s not our thing. We build durable, comfortable bikes for people of all walks of life - at fair prices.
For those not able to pay for one of our e-bikes in full upfront, we offer financing through Affirm, which allows you to pay for the bike making monthly payments over 6, 12 or 18 months.
Also, after the initial investment, riding an e-bike can save you money too. If you typically take the subway, bus or train to get work, think of all the ticket costs you’ll save riding an e-bike, not to mention parking costs, valet charges and gas. Some people may even be able to ditch their car altogether for an e-bike, saving significantly on car payments, licensing and insurance.
9. Get Real
At Charge, we believe there’s an absolute need to celebrate real life and not chase an idealized version of it. In fact, we shaped our whole brand by the real-life frustrations we’ve experienced ourselves and seen others face when bike shopping. We set out to eliminate things like the intimidating jargon, overwhelming number of product choices and male-centric catering. And with a team of like-minded, big-hearted individuals, supported by the technical expertise of Schwinn and Cannondale, we did just that.
Our bikes aren’t made to whiz across finish lines, but they will get you where you need and want to go, from the grocery store to grab coffee with friends or out to the beach to cruise the sand. They’re comfortable, safe and reliable, and they’re a heck of a lot of fun to ride. They’re made for real life—your life.
10. Try Without Commitment
Want to see for yourself what it feels like to ride a Charge e-bike? Take a test ride. There’s no commitment, and with a growing network of dealers and test-ride centers across the country, there’s probably a convenient one near you where you can take one for a spin.
So, there you have it—10 reasons why you should choose a Charge electric assist bike. We have plenty more reasons where those came from, but the bottom line is that e-bikes can add a lot of joy to your daily life. Life can be hard, but embracing the little moments as you traverse the hills and valleys helps. Our bikes are ready to help you do just that, one ride at a time.
